The train itself was an acquired experience — you really had to want to be there to enjoy it. The cabins of four were absolutely tiny and you almost never had time or space to yourself.
There were no showers and the bathroom situation was — to summarise - grotesque. That meant that we lived off a diet of noodles and…noodles.
Still, it was a welcome change from noodles every now and then. You could almost always get a beer, but funnily enough for Russia - it was actually illegal to buy vodka.
However, if you were really kind to Svetlana — a small, pocket rocket bar attendant who really seemed to be in charge of everything on the train such was the influence of her gung-ho personality - she would come and discretely serve you a teapot sneakily filled with delicious vodka, and even mugs to match!
However, it was a quirky time-zone situation that really cemented the strange and utter uniqueness of the whole journey.
Moreover, as we travelled through Siberia and edged closer towards Moscow, we moved through a number of different time zones as well. There was one stop about a day in, at a very small little town which seemed to be in the middle of absolute nowhere.
We got off the train for about 20 minutes and stretched our legs. Our watches said the time was about 4pm, but the clock on the platform said 6pm, so we decided that when we got back on the train, we would head into the restaurant cart, have some dinner and a few beers, and play some card games - a prominent feature of the entire trip.
When we hopped back on the train, we headed over to the restaurant cart but were greeted unceremoniously by Svetlana, saying the restaurant was closed because it was midnight.
We had no idea what was going on, but Svetlana pointed to the clock on that carriage and it did indeed say midnight. On top of this, it was almost always daylight, as we were travelling in the middle of a Siberian summer.
It got slightly dark at around 11pm and then light again at around 2am, so looking outside shed no light on what part of the day it actually was.
So, on top of the lack of TV, internet, food, water, space, properly functioning toilets, showers, and power — there was almost no concept of time as well.
The result of this was gloriously blissful. It was like nothing else mattered in the entire world. Nothing but this little old train, coursing its way across the largest country in the world.
The next morning, there was a distinct moment that I will never, ever forget. I got up early and went into the restaurant carriage with my notebook and pen.
The carriage was empty, and it was the first time I had a chance to try and collect my thoughts. I attempted to write some sort of diary to make sense of this wild adventure.
I remember struggling to put into words what had transpired over the last few days. Rather than getting frustrated in my lack of ability to write anything down, I stopped, and stared out the window, and watched the endless stream of Siberian birch trees flow past the window.
The longer I stared, the more trees there were. Something about that particular moment just made everything click. Here I was, in the middle of the Siberian forest, on a train with no time, unable to express what I was feeling.
Everything felt magical. Everything felt surreal. Everything just felt right. Slowly, I started to gather my thoughts. I felt so much luck, gratitude, and happiness for being able to be in this incredible, blissful moment.
What an incredible privilege it is to be able to travel the world, to explore foreign lands, to embrace foreign cultures, and to almost understand the power that travel has to transform your mind, and allow you to see the purest side of yourself.
It was in this moment that I knew I wanted more. It was in this moment that I knew I was ok to be away from home, and out of my comfort zone, if it meant I was in pursuit of these moments of presence, of clarity, and of pure magic.
It was in this moment that I was able to think back to my childhood — perhaps the last time I had felt so pure, thanks largely to the innocence of youth — and remember what two of my most raw passions and honest dreams were.
One of them was to be a tour guide. My father was a tour guide for many years before I was born, and as I was growing up, he would tell me these incredible stories of similar moments to the one I was experiencing on the train.
I had always said it was something I always wanted to try; maybe not forever, but certainly to give a go.
My working career had never been anything special. That moment on the train — that unforgettable moment — is when I decided to change my outlook on my career and apply to become a tour guide.
